Synopsis
A three-part glimpse into 500 years of privilege, power, and cultural patronage as the series examines sixteen lavish English country homes of aristocratic families and the treasures they contain, and looks at how country life was once lived and is lived today. The series complements the exhibition "The Treasure Houses of Britain: Five Hundred Years of Private Patronage and Art Collecting" at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from November 1985 through March 1986. "Building for Eternity" (Part One) visits Hardwick Hall, Burghley House, Wilton House, and Chatsworth, all sixteenth and seventeenth-century houses. "Palaces of Reason and Delight" (Part Two) glimpses the following eighteenth-century houses: Houghton Hall, Bowhill, Drumlanrig Castle, Boughton House, West Wycombe Park, and Syon House. "Recapturing the Past" (Part Three) focuses on the nineteenth-century with visits to Belvoir Castle, Plas Newydd, Penrhyn Castle, Wightwick Manor, Lindisfarne Castle, and Haddon Hall.
