Synopsis
Mary, an innocent young Irish girl from the East Side of New York, becomes a chorus girl in a Broadway show, getting to know very well two of the other girls in the show: Sally, who is too wise in the ways of the world; and Irene, lost in dreams of romance. Mary also gets to know Marcus Morton, the wealthy roué who keeps Sally in a luxurious apartment; he falls in love with Mary and asks her to marry him. She at first refuses, but when Jimmy Dugan, her onetime plumber sweetheart, expresses disgust with her new life, she is prompted by anger to accept Morton's offer. Disappointed by a love affair with another millionaire, Irene impulsively marries a college youth, only to be killed shortly afterward in an automobile accident. Greatly sobered by Irene's tragic death, Mary breaks off her engagement with Morton and returns to Jimmy's arms and the simple life on Avenue B.
