Synopsis
Mellie, a young woman living in a seaside resort in France, sees a stranger disembark from a bus. The next day she sees him watching her as she tries on a dress at her friend Nicole's boutique. That night, while her jealous airline pilot husband, Tony, is away, the stranger breaks into the house and assaults and rapes her. When she regains consciousness, she hears the intruder in the basement and kills him with two blasts from a shotgun when he tries to attack her again. In fear of reporting the incident to the police, she decides to throw the body off a cliff into the sea. Several days later, she sees a newspaper headline announcing the discovery of a body washed ashore in the bay. Harry Dobbs, an American stranger, approaches her at a wedding reception and accuses her of the murder of a sex maniac who escaped from a military prison asylum and stole $60,000 in U. S. Army funds. Despite Mellie's steadfast denial of guilt, Dobbs continues to pressure her for a confession and demands that she turn over a red airline bag which the dead man was carrying. His relentless hounding evokes childhood memories of discovering her mother with a lover, her father's badgering the revelation from her, and his furious reaction and desertion of the family. Mellie finds the bag with the money and goes to Dobbs's hotel room, where in his absence she searches his suitcase and discovers that he is a colonel in the U. S. Army. Dobbs catches her in his room and tells her that another woman has been arrested for the murder. Mellie travels to Paris to warn the accused woman's sister, a madam, and is attacked by three gangsters who think she knows too much. Dobbs comes to her rescue, and the two return to the coast, where they are informed by a local detective that the body washed ashore was not that of the man sought by Dobbs. Dobbs later finds the missing body and in the dead man's hand a button from Mellie's dress. Content to recover the stolen money, he decides not to implicate her.
