Synopsis
Charles, an aging Frenchman who has served a 5-year prison term for attempted burglary, ignores the pleas of his wife and makes elaborate plans for robbing the gambling casino at Cannes. Since the plot requires the assistance of others, he brings in Francis, a young man whom he met in prison, and Francis' brother-in-law, Louis. Knowing that the casino proceeds are kept in a basement vault which can be reached only by an elevator, Charles orders Francis to ingratiate himself with the dancers in the casino ballet troupe and learn the exact location of the backstage trapdoor which leads to the elevator shaft. The handsome Francis easily becomes involved in a romantic affair with Brigitte, one of the dancers, and gathers all the necessary data. On the night of the robbery, Francis goes to the casino roof and lowers himself down the elevator shaft; and, wearing a black mask, he confronts the head cashier with a machine gun as he is depositing the night's receipts. After obtaining the keys to the exit door, Francis admits Charles. The two leave with a billion francs, which Francis hides in a swimming pool locker room. They plan to make their getaway the following morning, but Francis notices that his picture appears in a newspaper photo of the casino and overhears the cashier remark that he remembers the suitcase in which the thieves stashed the money. He desperately slips the valise into the pool, but the bag opens and both Charles and Francis sit helplessly by as the franc notes float to the surface of the pool.
