Synopsis

Grady Dodd, a talented country and western musician, lives with his Uncle Kermit, a tobacco farmer who believes that music is no vocation for a man. Two of Grady's friends, Luke Harper, Kermit's hired hand, and Amy Carter, the daughter of the town's wealthiest man, conspire to induce Grady to perform at a jamboree. Upon seeing his nephew on a stage, Uncle Kermit has a mild heart attack and is hospitalized. When Grady is faced with a huge bill, Amy persuades her father, Vernon Carter, to cover the expense. Furious at this, and also bewildered when he notices that Uncle Kermit's hospital record lists no relatives, Grady confronts his uncle and learns that his musician mother was in a fatal accident after running away with another singer. Her dying wish was that Kermit bring up Grady as his own son. Angry at this belated disclosure, Grady leaves home to achieve success as a singer. He lands a job in a small Nashville night club and contacts Luke, who brings Kermit and Amy to the opening. Grady and Kermit are reserved with each other, but because Grady is determined to repay Mr. Carter for the hospital bill, he accepts a recording session that Carter has arranged. When Grady becomes an immediate hit, Amy and Luke devise a scheme for reconciling Grady and his uncle. Luke calls Grady to say that he is leaving Kermit's farm, and Grady, worried over his uncle being alone, rushes out with Amy to the farm but runs his car into a ditch. At Grady's bedside, Luke confesses his part in the hoax, and Uncle Kermit, now a big fan of Grady's, is reconciled with his nephew.
