Synopsis
At the Amalgam Broadcasting Company on Hollywood and Vine, pageboy Jimmy Kelly meets the new receptionist, Anne Mason, and to impress her, makes an audition tape of her singing. Radio producer Farrel then advises him that he will lose his job if he does it again. Later, singing star Rita Wilson meets with J. B. Hastings, the sponsor of her program, and demands that he double her salary and give her total control of the program. While Rita is rehearsing, Jimmy and fellow pageboy Sammy let Tex Barton, a cowboy fan of Rita, attend a rehearsal. During the rehearsal, Rita asks Farrel to change the script, and they quarrel. Rita seems taken aback when she sees Tex in the audience, and a short while later, the lights go out, and Rita is shot dead. While the police are questioning the station employees, Tex sneaks out of the room. Later, Farrel asks Jimmy not to disclose the fact that he quarrelled with Rita to the police. While practicing their comedy routine, Jimmy and Sammy find the murder weapon hidden in a ventilation grate and suddenly become the prime suspects. After it is determined that their fingerprints are not on the gun, however, the police use the serial number to trace the gun to Tex, but before he can be arrested, his body is found in a closet. Because he must replace Rita, Farrel agrees to audition Anne and, when she turns out to be a good singer, hires her. Jimmy finds Tex's address and, together with Sammy, investigates. In Tex's suitcase, Jimmy finds papers, a photo of Anne and a telegram signed by a Gladys Wharton. Jimmy thinks that Anne is Gladys, and the police, who have followed them, then decide that Anne is the killer. After she admits that she knew Tex before she arrived in Hollywood, Anne is arrested. Jimmy then tries to discover if anyone else at the station knew Tex. He learns that Hastings used to work in Cheyenne, as did Anne and Tex. Meanwhile, Farrel bails Anne out of jail, and Jimmy becomes convinced that he is the killer. Finally the police gather all the suspects together. Jimmy wires the Cheyenne radio station and learns that Rita's real name was Gladys Wharton. She was married to Tex, but fell in love with Hastings and left town after Tex became involved in a shooting incident with him. Hastings killed both Rita and Tex to keep the incident quiet. The mystery solved, Anne goes on the air to great acclaim.

The working titles of this film were Like Kelly Did and Make Way for Kelly. Edmund Kelso's screenplay was first produced for Monogram in 1940 under the title Up in the Air. Howard Bretherton directed Frankie Darro and Marjorie Reynolds in the earlier version (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1931-40; F3.4782).
