Synopsis

After Cassius Clay wins several Golden Glove awards and a gold medal for boxing in the Olympic Games, a group of millionaires from Louisville, Kentucky, invests in him, and his professional boxing career begins. Clay fights Henry Cooper, Cleveland Williams, Floyd Patterson, and finally, in 1964, Sonny Liston for the heavyweight championship. In the meantime, Clay has become influenced by Black Muslim leader Malcolm X; he soon converts to the Muslim faith and changes his name to Muhammad Ali. Because of his religious convictions, Ali refuses induction into the United States Army in 1967 but is denied a conscientious objector's status. The New York State Athletic Commission also refuses to accept his religious beliefs as justification for not serving in the Army, and he is stripped of the heavyweight title and barred from the ring.
